I was somewhat nervous burying my Dad in his home state, never having been there before. We traveled over 16 hours to bury my Dad at the Fort McPherson National Cemetery and I was really pleased with how beautiful it was. The cemetery itself is very very well maintained and it really put my mind at ease bringing him there, the grounds keepers were hard at work doing a great job.

Leading up to our arrival was a challenge...
Having never buried a veteran before, everything was new to us and we needed strong guidance.
In other words, a to- do list.
A lot of dissapointing last minute surprises popped up along the way. For instance, 10 days before the service, our funeral coordinator asked us why we hadn't ordered the head stone yet, and that head stones take 40 days to make. We were told it was typical for services to be conducted without a head stone present, and while at the service, we realized this to be true. There were several grave sites awaiting head stones with temporary "Markers."

We were also asked "You mean you haven't gone out and gotten a service flag yet?"
Turns out... you aren't presented with a flag. You have to go out and get your own. You then give it to the department of defense when you arrive, they properly fold it for you during the service, and they give it back to you.

We had to coordinate military honors on our own, and hire a pastor. All of this was done at a last minute scramble because we weren't told we had to do any of that.
Luckily, the entire service went perfect. It was a beautiful day, we had a wonderful pastor, and the military honors were spot on. It was a great burial for my dad.

At the end of the service we were told by our coordinator we would receive a photograph of my Dad's headstone as soon as it arrived and were placed on the the site.
The burial was May 19th 2014 and the date today is Jan 17th 2015, and I still have not received a photograph. I have made 3 attempts for them to send the photograph, making sure they have my correct address on file etc. The last time I called I was promised the photograph and still have not received one. My last attempt ended with "Our photographer is no longer working here, I will go take the photograph myself right now and put it in the mail today."
    That was two months ago.
To sum it all up, beautiful cemetery, terrible coordination and guidance.

  • A serene and quite place of beauty. Take a rest off the freeway and pray for or meditate upon our fallen heroes if you can.

My mother in law and father in law's ashes are both interred there. Even though far from where I live in Colorado, my wife's ashes are being interred there this year as will mine when my time on earth is done. May God bless you and peace be with you...
